I have taught a variety statistics courses, both as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Duke University and as a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Each course has offered a unique perspective on pedagogical techniques and provided a valuable learning experience. Every class is a unique blend of students, which provides a diverse spectrum of insights and challenges. Every lecture is an opportunity to present the concepts to the students in an interesting and insightful way. I feel it is important to provide real-world examples that the students can relate both to their every day life as well as to their future careers. Whether their careers will be mathematically based, rooted in another scientific field, or perhaps developed in the social sciences, the concepts in an introduction to statistics course are the building blocks for scientific exploration and collaboration across disciplines. A teacher’s role is highly impactive and exciting. Every student approaches the material from their own perspective, bringing their own ideas and excitement to the concepts. As a teacher my role is to encourage their curiosity and help them to relate the concepts to their own experience. I encourage questions and comments, and enjoy my students’ interactions and feedback. I view every class as an opportunity to learn more about my subject as well as to learn another way to make the material come to life for the students.
