In this class you will gain the numerical literacy necessary to understand and develop arguments in subjects from sociology to medicine. By the end of the course you will be able to critically analyze statistical studies in a newspaper or journal, and will have a foundation for data-informed decision making in a broad range of fields. Computer lab sessions and a project develop practical data exploration and modelling skills. Examples will be in part drawn from current news stories and Duke community issues. You will acquire a basic understanding of probability and descriptive and inferential statistics. No prerequisites are necessary.
