Dear Parents and Bassett Resident;
Welcome to Bassett Hall! My name is Dalene Stangl, and I will be your Faculty-in-Residence. What is a Faculty-in-Residence? It is a Duke faculty member and their family who live in the first-year residence halls. I am a Professor of Statistics and Public Policy, and my spouse, Rick Richardson, is an independent computer consultant. Our son, Jeremy, is a senior in electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh. For more information, you are welcome to visit my website, www.stat.duke.edu/~ds6e. Be sure to look at the Bassett webpage www.stat.duke.edu/~ds6e/bassett too!
The mission of the Faculty-in-Residence program is to increase the range and quality of student-faculty contact beyond the classroom and to foster an environment in which learning and living are intertwined. This means we develop residential programming, encourage student use of Duke resources, orchestrate activities between students and other Duke faculty, encourage habits of curiosity and involvement in educational/cultural activities outside the classroom, and interact with students on a daily basis.
Move-in for Bassett will be the morning of August 25 from 10am-Noon. We ask that all students, and hopefully parents too, stop by our apartment, Room 103. We will be providing refreshments and giving a brief overview of life in Bassett Hall. We will also have maps of the area for finding Wal-Mart, restaurants, malls, carpet stores, etc. The door will be open!
Enclosed with this letter is an invitation to Bassett's annual 'Family-Meets-Friend' brunch, held during Parents' Weekend (Oct. 22-24). Students cook brunch to thank parents for making their Duke attendance possible. Many parents have told us this is their favorite part of the weekend, because they meet their son or daughter's friends, other parents, staff from the Office of Student Development, and faculty advisors. We really hope you will be able to join us!
See you soon!
